When it comes to unusual custom guitars, they don’t come much more unusual than the gold and mother of pearl coated Gibson Les Paul that was customised by a time-served luthier in the UK. Kim Webber, 55, from Somerset in the UK was handed a vintage Gibson Les Paul Deluxe by a customer who wanted the previous modifications removing, modifications that included plastic triangles being stuck to the body, and new modifications to be made.

Vintage Gibson Les Pauls are adored by guitar players across the world and this particular example is no different, which is why its owner asked Webber to strip back the instrument and customise it using fine shells and precious metals.

Some Things Never Change At The Gibson Custom Shop

Tuesday, Feb. 7th 2012 5:35 PM

The Gibson Custom Shop has been hand making some of the finest guitars in the world for over 80 years and it even became its own separate division of Gibson in 1986. However, as is the case with many time-served craft making processes, some things never change at the Gibson Custom Shop, with many tools and techniques that were pioneered by Orville Gibson all of those decades ago still being used today.

One thing that has always been the mark of a classic guitar and a hallmark of the Gibson Custom Shop is the use of the very finest quality woods. For as long as the shop has been in business the best grades of mahogany, spruce, maple, and holly have been used to manufacture their custom guitars. The finest woods from Canada, the Pacific Northwest and the Northeast are sourced to create the best possible bodies and necks.

Pawn Stars Buy Les Paul’s Cream 1961 Gibson SG

Friday, Jan. 27th 2012 10:12 AM

The Pawn Stars team are used to being offered some treasures but, when they were offered a vintage Gibson Les Paul, they spent big to buy this particular ‘piece of history’, but why exactly? Well, Pawn Stars bought Les Paul’s cream 1961 Gibson SG, that’s why they spent big. Not often do you get the chance to buy a Gibson Les Paul that was owned by the man who made it famous, but that’s exactly the chance that the Pawn Stars team got and they took it.

The historic vintage guitar was being sold by the nephew of singer Mary Ford, who is Paul’s ex wife, and it was accompanied by paperwork documenting Paul’s relationship with Gibson, a relationship that blew hot and cold at the best of times. So, Pawn Stars really were buying a piece of musical history and at a princely sum too. They paid $90,000 for the historic Gibson Les Paul, a price that the nephew was adamant about before he entered the shop.

Peter Frampton’s Guitar Has Been Returned After 30 Years

Thursday, Jan. 19th 2012 9:12 AM

In 1980, Peter Frampton’s prized 1954 Gibson Les Paul was on a cargo plane along with his other equipment when it crashed en route to Panama. All of his equipment, including the vintage guitar, was believed to have been destroyed in the accident and Frampton’s career continued without his beloved Les Paul. However, thanks to a couple of fans and the Curacao Tourist Board, Peter Frampton’s guitar has been returned after 30 years of separation.

The guitar was Frampton’s number one instrument, which he used in sessions with George Harrison and Harry Nilsson, and which he believed to be lost forever. But a fan of Frampton thought that he may have discovered the prized Gibson Les Paul on the Dutch island of Curacao so he enlisted the assistance of another fan in Holland and, along with some help from the Curacao Tourist Board, they reunited the lost guitar with Frampton in Nashville just before Christmas.
