Many of the older classic Strats display signs of continued use and abuse at the hands of gigging guitarists and players. This user worn look is as desirable to many players as is a guitar of real vintage. As a result, both the Fender Custom Shop and enthusiastic guitar customizers have begun to make new Strats look as good as old and battered ones.
The official Fender Custom Shop pieces are a series called Heavy Relic, and are modern, custom built Strats given a weathered and aged appearance through a range of hand crafted techniques. The 'reliced' Strats come with at a premium, as each one is unique and comes with a certificate of authenticity and a special case. There are also some custom builders who've used Strat guitars to age themselves.
Either way, a Strat described as Relic will be a new guitar / reissue that looks old, battered and dirty. Rusty tuners and tremolo parts, worn and damaged bodies and a distinguished distressed look can be your for a lot less than a vintage guitar and has that grunge aesthetic that appeals to many players today.
